Kris’s head snapped up. Through the fog of sleep she tried to figure where she was and why her legs and back hurt so much. She blinked and yawned as her hands found a child lying on each side of her. Movement and voices outside pulled her back to their dire situation.

Painful pins and needles consumed both of her legs from toe to hip. She wiggled her toes and feet which only made the sensation worse. Not being able to stand it a moment longer, she supported the children’s heads while pushing her legs out straight.

The shock of the weird and oddly painful sensation stole the breath from her.

Mercy murmured and called her name, wrapping an arm around her. She wrapped an arm around her daughter but kept her legs free, doing her best to keep them moving even though each movement sent another jolt screaming through her.

Orion moaned and held his stomach. How long had it been since the child had eaten? Then she thought about the kick the stringy haired guard had given him. Could the boy have broken ribs or internal damage?

She pushed past her painful legs and used her free hand to gently palpate Orion’s chest and stomach. The boy didn’t increase his moaning or react with pain to her gentle prodding. She let out a sigh of relief. Hunger she knew he could tolerate, for at least a while longer. Soon they should be out of here, right?

With her legs calming down and the children mostly asleep, she returned her attention to the movement outside. Footsteps ran back and forth, and men murmured, but it didn’t seem like any of them talked to the guards outside her tent.

Earlier when Meyers had been only feet from the tent, she had worried he would enter and terrorize her and the children. Even twenty minutes after he had stormed away, she feared he would return.

She couldn’t believe that she had fallen asleep after that. Through the crack in the flaps of the door, she could only see darkness. It was still night, the longest night of her life. Would it ever end?

Surely, the sun would rise soon. Would that be when Blake made his move? The early dawn had always been his favorite time.

She shook her legs. No more falling back to sleep. From here on out, she had to be ready to run.

She half considered waking the kids, but footsteps approaching the tent halted her.

With no warning, the tent flaps burst open, letting in the cool fresh air and sending goosebumps traveling up her arms. Meyers stormed into the tent, a dim lantern held in one hand. It cast a weird glow onto his face, making him all the more frightening.

“What’s your camp’s attack plan?” Meyers shouted as he entered, waking both children.

They huddled closer to her, and she wrapped her arms around them protectively.

She set her chin in grim determination, Blake’s voice instructing her. Don’t give away any intel. If you have to say something, give broad, general knowledge that is already known.
